Project Overview

Three years ago, while at Hatch—a global consulting powerhouse in the mining and digital industries—I was tasked with a high-stakes challenge: modernizing how Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail assessed and managed its 8,000 rail crossings across Canada.

The Problem: Mountains of Manual Work

CP Rail’s process for assessing rail flaws and track geometry was deeply inefficient. Testing wasn’t always performed regularly, and in some cases, critical data was missed entirely. Field teams were responsible for collecting and recording data at each crossing, but their tools were anything but modern:

80+ Excel Sheets: Field teams relied on a labyrinth of spreadsheets to track, record, and analyze data—a method prone to errors and delays.
Lack of Regular Testing: Gaps in assessments led to inconsistencies in maintaining the safety and efficiency of crossings.
Manual Workflows: Without a centralized system, teams were bogged down by repetitive, time-consuming tasks.
